What to check before merging or splitting a PDF

Merging scans or cutting a few pages out of a long PDF is usually simple. The problems show up later: wrong page order, a sideways page, or a password that blocks the browser.

Before you merge

Sort by filename, such as 01, 02, 03, in your file manager, then upload. Merge tools usually keep the order you selected.

Fix orientation first. Phone photos are often rotated. Straighten them with Image Rotate or rescan before merging.

Password-protected or restricted PDFs may not open in the browser. Export an unlocked copy in a trusted environment first.

If you have many sources, open each and glance at the first page so you do not mix in someone else’s material or blank sheets.

When you split

Cut only the page ranges the recipient needs, such as pages 3–7 or page 12. Fewer pages means a smaller file and less chance of sharing too much.

Open the result and check the first and last page. Scan tables of contents are easy to miscount.

When you need several ranges, split once and name each file clearly, for example contract-signature and contract-appendix.

Size and quality

Huge merged files usually contain high-resolution photos. Compress images before Images to PDF, or try PDF Compress on the result. Browser rewrite results vary by file.

Keep originals of important contracts and send processed copies. Files are processed in your local browser and are not uploaded to our servers. Still clear downloads on shared computers.
